“Beware of the Ides of March.” Over 425 years ago Shakespeare wrote these words in his play “Julius Caesar.” Perhaps today is the most appropriate day in the year to consider which warnings we heed and which warnings we hurl. Believers Beware!
Caesar ignored the oracle’s warning at his peril only to be killed by his dearest and closest confidant, Brutus.
Today I asked myself, “How do I respond to warnings?” How about you dear reader?
I became defensive and obstinate
About four months ago, my son was doing his Eagle Scout project at the Fredericksburg YMCA. I am occasionally helpful, rarely if ever handy, and frequently and dangerously undaunted.
I ran an extension cord through a door to operate a circular saw during the construction portion of the project. A man walking out warned me rather rudely, “I wouldn’t do that if I were you. That’s a bad idea. You’ll get yourself electrocuted.”
I became defensive and obstinate, “This isn’t my first time operating power tools. I’m 47 years old. I’ve done a few projects and managed not to electrocute myself so far. Thanks for the public safety announcement.”
My pride got in the way
After a pretty full day of using the saw without being electrocuted, I triumphantly began to retrieve my cord. At the door I discovered a now mangled version of my formerly brand new extension cord complete with exposed copper wires. Yikes
I may not have electrocuted myself or my son, but I must have been close.
Pride first, safety second?! I refused to accept or heed his warning because accepting it meant feeling shame or guilt for my faulty reasoning or incompetence. In other words, my pride got in the way of my principles.
Thinking about it today. He could have worded it differently sure, but I should have accepted his rather important and relevant, albeit rude advice.
Believers Beware!
Our lives our image, our condition, and our judgment of our life’s work is a memory. That memory is a memorial. That memorial is a house of cards often carelessly and hastily constructed each night, moment, or milestone.
Humility, obscene and grotesque portions of it, are required to see the world as it truly is and ourselves as we truly are.
